I made this little flag using a burlap placemat and the whole project took less than an hour.

Hobby Lobby, you know I love you more than my luggage, right?  This week, I found burlap placemats there for $3.99 and then I used my 40% off coupon on top of that – you do the math.  So, here’s the deal…  I have been wanting to make a new burlap flag for my garden stand to replace the old one from two and a half years ago, that looks like this…

One true fact is that I despise working with burlap, it sheds, it’s itchy and I feel like I’m breathing in the fibers, every time I do a project with it.  Just between you and me, I’m kinda over the whole burlap decor thing completely but it does make great outdoor flag material.  So, back to my point… I was dreading sewing the stuff to make this flag project until I found those great placemats at Hobby Lobby.

IMG_5170SUPPLIES USED FOR THIS PROJECT: one placemat, an exacto knife, a pen, something circular for tracing, orange paint, white paint, a paint brush, star stencil, ribbon, scissors, measuring tape, and a hot glue gun

I began by cutting the top seam open because I knew I would need some kind of liner to keep the paint from bleeding through and guess what?  It was already lined in plastic on the inside.  Woohoo!

My project moved very quickly after this little happy discovery.  I started out by tracing a circle (using a storage container lid).

Then I painted the circle using orange paint.

I let the paint dry completely.

Then, using a star stencil, I painted three white stars.

I cut 3 strips of ribbon, measuring 7.5 inches.

Then, I hot-glued them into the opening that I cut earlier, remember that? Then I hot-glued the entire opening closed.  I attached strips of ribbon (with hot glue) on the top and bottom too.

And that’s it… all finished.  We are now sporting some Tennessee Pride in our yard!

If you aren’t from Tennessee, then you probably won’t understand the whole TRISTAR thing.  There’s been a lot about it in our news over the past year.  It’s here to stay and I love the logo.  On top of that, my blood runs orange as I am a Knoxville girl and a huge UT fan.  This is just my unique spin on a TN Football flag.

Here’s another recent TRISTAR project of mine…
